Kachina Art
Hardin's vivid paintings combine traditional Native American symbolism with abstract art. Her designs portray strong ties to the beauty of Native American kachinas and inspire mixed media studio projects.

Light
Rembrandt's paintings reveal his masterful use of light and shadow accentuating form. Students use special pastel sticks, similar to those used by Rembrandt, which allow for exploration with highlighting and shading.

Mobiles and Stabiles
Close up views of Calder's beautifully engineered mobiles and stables inspire students to apply their skill and knowledge of shape, balance, abstraction, and three-dimensional composition. Students experience the design and balancing of a three-dimensional wire sculpture.

Narrative Forms
Lawrence's narrative style and positive rendering of African American culture challenge students to create a composition that tells a story. Student compositions combine cut paper and line drawing techniques with rhythm and repetition.

Color Fantasy
Gauguin's brilliant Tahitian landscapes allow students to explore abstract color choices and the effect of color on mood. Oil pastel layering and painting techniques are used in the studio art project, emphasizing brightly colored landscapes and palm trees.

Drawing
Da Vinci's fascinating life in the Renaissance introduce students to life drawing experiences. They choose botanical specimens to draw, with careful attention to detail just as renaissance artists would have done. Special sketching pencils give added depth and shading to student drawings.
